🎄 Barcelona in December with kids

The complete family guide

Let's be honest: Barcelona in December isn't the summer postcard of beach and sangria. It's 11°C on average, the sun sets at 5:30pm, and the Med at 14°C rules out swimming. But that's precisely what makes it interesting. The city empties of its 30 million annual tourists, hotel prices drop 30-50%, and Barcelona puts on its Christmas outfit: centuries-old markets outside the cathedral, light installations on the Passeig de Gràcia, and living nativity scenes in the Gothic Quarter. With the right hotel and the right plan, it's a seriously underrated family destination.

Mornings are often sunny and pleasant (a jumper will do). Afternoons can turn grey, especially in the second half of the month. Rain comes in short bursts, rarely all-day downpours. The sea breeze in the evening drops the feels-like to 3-4°C. Early December is milder than Christmas week.

Barcelona at Christmas: markets and lights

Christmas market with illuminated stalls
The Fira de Santa Llúcia outside the cathedral: 280 stalls since 1786

Catalan Christmas is different from what you know at home, and that's what makes it fascinating for kids.

The Fira de Santa Llúcia sets up every year outside the cathedral, from 29 November to 23 December. It's Barcelona's oldest Christmas market (since 1786): 280 stalls of handmade nativity scenes, trees, and the famous caganers — those Catalan figurines that make children laugh (and parents scramble to explain the tradition). Free, open 10am-9pm. Go on a weekday morning; weekends are heaving from 11am.

The Sagrada Familia market is smaller but the setting is unbeatable: stalls face the illuminated Nativity facade. Churros and hot chocolate for €3.

Every evening, the Passeig de Gràcia lights up with installations between Casa Batlló and La Pedrera. The walk is free and kids love it.

📍 Metro Jaume I (L4) for the Fira. Metro Sagrada Familia (L2/L5) for the market. Lights switch on around 5:30pm.

Rainy days: museums and the aquarium

With 5 rainy days on average, you need a plan B. Good news: Barcelona's best family attractions are indoors.

CosmoCaixa is Spain's best science museum for kids. The recreated Amazonian rainforest under a glass dome (with real animals), the planetarium, the 9-storey geological wall — 3-12 year olds easily spend 3 hours here. €6/adult, free under 16.

The Barcelona Aquarium at Port Vell has an 80-metre underwater tunnel beneath the sharks. The interactive Explora! zone is designed for 3-12 year olds. €23/adult, €16 child 5-10.

For teenagers: the FC Barcelona Museum at Camp Nou (€26). For little ones: the Chocolate Museum in the Born (€6) combines a visit with a chocolate-making workshop.

📍 CosmoCaixa: FGC Av. Tibidabo + 5 min walk, closed Mondays. Aquarium: metro Barceloneta (L4), open 10am-7:30pm in December.

Sunny days: Gaudí and the Gothic Quarter without the crowds

Sagrada Familia stained glass
The Sagrada Familia stained glass: winter light intensifies the colours

When the sun's out (and it often is in the morning), December Barcelona offers something impossible in summer: monuments without queues.

Parc Güell in December: 10 minutes' queue instead of 90 in August. Low winter light on Gaudí's mosaics is particularly photogenic. €10/adult, €7 child 7-12, free under 7.

The Sagrada Familia can be visited in peace. The stained glass throws incredible colours in the slanting winter light. Book the 9am slot to be among the first in.

The Gothic Quarter is ideal for a morning wander: medieval lanes, plaça del Pi with buskers, and a stop for churros at Xurreria Trebol (churros + hot chocolate €4.50).

📍 Parc Güell: metro Lesseps (L3) then 15 min walk. Sagrada Familia: book 2 weeks ahead on the official site. Gothic Quarter: metro Jaume I (L4).

Where to stay: the family-friendly areas in December

In December, forget the Barceloneta (beach restaurants closed, bitter sea wind in the evening). Focus on three areas.

L'Eixample is the best all-round choice: wide, flat avenues (buggy-friendly), Sagrada Familia and Passeig de Gràcia on foot, and the widest choice of hotels with spas. The Mandarin Oriental on Passeig de Gràcia is Barcelona's only hotel with a year-round indoor pool: in December, that's a massive selling point.

The Gothic Quarter / Born puts the Christmas markets and museums within walking distance. The Hotel 1898 on La Rambla has a hammam in the historic vaults.

Sant Martí (metro Glòries) is less central but the Novotel Barcelona City offers the best family value: pool on the 19th floor, kids club, game room, free breakfast and accommodation for 2 children under 16.

Our recommended hotels for December

In winter, the hotel makes or breaks the trip. Without the beach, kids need alternatives: heated pool, family-friendly spa, or kids club. Our picks by budget.
