Rome in 4 days with kids: October itinerary

4 days to explore Rome with children under the autumn sun, stress-free and queue-free

Four days in Rome in October is the ideal format for a family: long enough to cover the essentials without burning out the children, and short enough that every day stays enjoyable. This itinerary balances big-ticket monuments with green breaks, cultural visits and downtime. Each day follows a child-friendly rhythm: out the door by 9am when the October air is still cool (13-15°C), main visit in the morning, a long lunch at a neighbourhood trattoria, then a lighter activity in the afternoon before making the most of the mild evenings.

All prices listed are verified for 2025-2026. Under-18s get free entry to every Italian state museum and site (Colosseum, Forum, Borghese Gallery). At the Vatican, children aged 6-18 pay a reduced rate of 8 EUR. Public transport is free for under-10s accompanied by a fare-paying adult. A single ticket costs 1.50 EUR or you can buy a 72-hour pass for 18 EUR per adult.

Top tip: book your Colosseum and Vatican time slots online as far ahead as you can. Even in October, morning slots sell out. The Borghese Gallery requires a mandatory reservation (bookings open 10 days before your visit). For everything else, you can wing it on the day.

The icons of the centro storico

The Pantheon in Rome, first stop on the family itinerary
9:00 - 10:30Morning

Pantheon

Start at the Pantheon, open from 9am. The 9-metre oculus in the dome fascinates children. Tell them it is the oldest intact building in Rome (2,000 years). Entry: 5 EUR/adult, free under 18.

💶 5 EUR/adult📍 Metro A Barberini then 10 min walk. No booking needed in October.
💡 Astuce famille : On an overcast day, show the children how rain falls through the oculus and drains through the floor.
10:30 - 12:00Morning

Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps

15 min walk from the Pantheon. The Trevi Fountain is far less packed on an October morning. Give the children a coin for the tossing ritual. Then walk up to the Spanish Steps (Piazza di Spagna).

💶 Free📍 Free access. Sitting and eating on the steps is not allowed.
💡 Astuce famille : Arrive before 11am to beat the midday tour groups.
12:30 - 14:00Lunch

Lunch near Piazza Navona

Sit down at a trattoria on Piazza Navona or on a side street (cheaper). Children love watching the street performers during the meal.

💶 40-55 EUR family📍 Avoid restaurants directly facing the fountains (inflated prices). Try Via del Governo Vecchio, 50 metres away.
💡 Astuce famille : Order supplì (fried rice balls) as a starter. Children always ask for seconds.
15:00 - 17:00Afternoon

Piazza Navona and gelato

Stroll around Piazza Navona and admire the three Baroque fountains. Grab a gelato at Frigidarium (Via del Governo Vecchio 112) or Giolitti (Via degli Uffici del Vicario 40). Then wander down to Campo de' Fiori.

💶 4-6 EUR/gelato📍 Campo de' Fiori market closes around 2pm on weekdays, but surrounding shops stay open.
💡 Astuce famille : Real artisan gelato has natural colours (pistachio is grey-green, not bright green).
🍽️ Où manger : Lunch trattoria near Piazza Navona: 40-55 EUR for 4. Dinner near the Pantheon: 50-65 EUR.
🌙 Le soir : Head back to the Trevi Fountain after 8pm to see it lit up. Magical atmosphere and far fewer people than during the day.
