Flying into Heraklion airport puts you 25 minutes from Hersonissos, the main resort strip. Chania airport serves the western end of the island. Greek roads in Crete are generally good but mountain roads to south-coast beaches can be narrow. We spent 10 days at a beachfront hotel in Hersonissos with a 4-year-old and a 7-year-old. The routine was breakfast, beach until noon, back to the pool for the afternoon, then a slow walk to a taverna for dinner. The kids played in the shallows for hours without getting cold. The 7-year-old learned to snorkel on day three and would not stop talking about the fish. By evening they were so tired from the sun and swimming that bedtime was effortless. The tavernas were patient with kids, even when our youngest knocked over a glass of water. Twice.

The pool has amazing views of Chania bay and the White Mountains behind. Kids loved the cats that roam the garden. Stalós beach is sandy and shallow, perfect for our 4-year-old. Dinner at the hotel restaurant was honest Cretan food at fair prices. The only downside: the walk back uphill from the beach with tired kids.

This is the no-frills beach option and it delivers exactly what you need. We walked out of our room, crossed the garden, and our feet were in the sand. The kids loved that immediacy. Beach is sand-and-pebble, not pure sand, so water shoes help.

Santa Marina is the "escape hatch" all-inclusive — close enough to Chania that you actually leave the resort once or twice. The 4-star amenities are tighter than the 5-stars but the beach in front is wide, sandy and shallow for 30 metres, which matters with small kids.
