Pet-Friendly Venice Hotels for Families With Dogs

5 family-friendly hotels with pet friendly in Venice . Handpicked for families who want the best.

Bringing a dog to Venice with kids sounds romantic until you realise the entire city is stairs and water taxis. Many Venice hotels say they accept pets but mean small dogs only, no extra charge but no actual amenities, and you discover at check-in that the lift is too narrow for a folded buggy and a dog. The five hotels below are different. Each genuinely welcomes dogs of typical family sizes, offers pet bowls or beds, and sits on a route that works for a family with both stroller and leash. Photos and prices are from this season.

Venice with both children and a dog reveals a different city than most tourists see. Dogs slow you down, kids ignore the famous sights, and you end up in quiet sestieri like Castello or Dorsoduro where locals walk their own dogs morning and night. You see the everyday Venice: the bakeries, the small parks, the canals without cruise crowds. It is genuinely lovely, and parents who have done it before will not stay anywhere central anymore.

πŸ•Why Pet-Friendly Matters More in Venice

Piazza San Marco is the magnet for most visitors, but with kids and a leash, you'll fight crowds and over-attentive pigeons. Better to do it once, early, then escape. The Doge's Palace allows assistance dogs only, so plan a tag-team with your partner.

The Frari church and Scuola Grande di San Rocco are calm alternatives that welcome well-behaved dogs in a carrier. Vaporetto rides are free for dogs under a certain height (officially in a bag, in practice nobody minds a calm dog at your feet). The Lido beach is reachable by vaporetto in 20 minutes and has a stretch where dogs run free.

Many families end up doing this every afternoon. For meals, restaurants in Cannaregio and Dorsoduro consistently welcome dogs at outdoor tables, and a few have a water bowl waiting before you ask. Avoid Rialto Bridge at peak hours with both a stroller and a dog.

It does not work.

Parent's take

Travel documents matter. Your dog needs an EU pet passport with current rabies, microchip ID, and tapeworm treatment if coming from outside the EU. Italian trains accept dogs with muzzle and lead. Print everything before you arrive: it saves an evening of phone calls if reception needs proof.

Why families love Hotel Palazzo Priuli

We arrived with a 12-kilo cocker spaniel and a 7-year-old and were genuinely welcomed. The room was a family suite with a small sitting area where the dog could settle while we got ready. Sound carries between rooms here, so light sleepers will hear neighbours. Breakfast is buffet, served in a frescoed dining room; staff brought a water bowl without being asked. The walk to San Marco is six minutes, but we mostly walked north into Castello, much calmer for dog and child.

Why families love Ca' Bonfadini Historic Experience

This is the splurge option in our list, but for a family with a dog it is hard to beat. The private garden was the deciding factor for us. Our golden retriever could circle off-lead before bed every night. The room had two queens and a roll-out for our 9-year-old. The pet welcome basket included a small bag of treats and a clearly used but clean towel for the dog. Spa is adults-only but bookable in 30-minute slots with reception watching the kids.

Why families love Hotel Casa Verardo Residenza d'Epoca

Excellent value for a family with a dog who don't need luxury. Our 18-kilo lab was welcomed without fuss, and reception suggested a nearby campo where she could meet other dogs in the mornings. The room was a triple with a sofa bed, simply decorated but spotless. No lift, but only one flight to our floor. Bring your own bowl and bed. Breakfast was Continental and quick. Position is great for San Marco access without being inside the crowd.

Why families love Pensione Accademia - Villa Maravege

If you want Venice that feels like a friend's villa, this is it. The garden is enclosed and our 25-kilo border collie had run of it after-hours. The family room was a converted upper-floor suite with sloped ceilings; charming for kids over 6, possibly tricky for tall adults. Breakfast in the garden is the highlight: birds, espresso, slow time. The owner is a third-generation host and remembers the dog's name on day two. Walk to Accademia gallery is two minutes; vaporetto is right at the gate.

Why families love Hotel Al Ponte Mocenigo

Our second visit. The hotel really does have a small courtyard where dogs can decompress, which matters more than you'd think after a day of crowds. Family room had two single beds plus a queen, comfortable for our three kids in tag-team naps. The owners genuinely like dogs. Our terrier got a treat at check-in. Breakfast is small but well-made: yoghurt, fresh bread, espresso. Location works for the kid-friendly Natural History Museum next door, which welcomes dogs in carriers.

πŸ’‘Five Practical Tips Before Bringing the Dog

  • 1Confirm the dog policy in writing before arrival. Some Venice hotels say pets allowed but mean under 8kg. If your dog is bigger, get the size confirmed by email so you have a paper trail at check-in. Also ask about the extra cleaning fee, which can be 25 to 50 euros per stay.
  • 2Pack a folding water bowl and a small first-aid kit. Venice pharmacies don't carry pet supplies, and vets are scattered across the islands. A travel bowl, vet-wrap, and tweezers for splinters are enough for most family trips.
  • 3Choose a hotel with ground-floor entry or a wide lift. Most Venetian palazzi have narrow staircases that were built before modern strollers. A hotel with a piano nobile and a working lift saves you carrying both child and dog up three flights.
  • 4Walk your dog at sunrise. Venice gets crowded by 10am and stays packed until 7pm. Between 6 and 8am, the city is yours and the dog can be off-leash on most campi. Many hotels can pack a coffee thermos for you to take.
  • 5Bring proof of vaccinations and EU pet passport. Italian police can check, especially on the Lido and Murano vaporetto routes. A photo on your phone is not enough. Original passport plus a photo backup is the safe combo.
