Sendai is the largest city in the Tohoku region and the capital of Miyagi Prefecture, built around a station hub that puts trains, hot-spring day baths and family restaurants within easy walking distance. Families base themselves either right by Sendai Station for quick access to the city, or thirty minutes west in the Akiu Onsen valley, where ryokan and hot-spring hotels sit against mountain scenery near the Rairaikyo Gorge. Sendai Airport is 30-40 minutes by taxi from the station area, considerably longer on public transport, so hotel location changes the arrival day more than the brochure suggests.
