Muscat spreads along the Gulf of Oman in a thin ribbon of white low-rise buildings, wedged between the Hajar Mountains and the sea. Families land at Muscat International Airport and are usually at a pool within the hour, since most family hotels cluster in Al Ghubra, Qurum and Shatti Al Qurum, ten to twenty minutes apart by taxi. Days here run around the heat: pools and beaches in the morning, an air-conditioned break after lunch, then the Mutrah Corniche or Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque gardens once the sun drops.
