Best Beach Hotels for Families in Cape Town

11 family-friendly hotels with beach access in Cape Town . Handpicked for families who want the best.

Cape Town has two very different beach personalities, and picking the wrong side of the peninsula shapes your whole trip. The Atlantic beaches (Camps Bay, Clifton, Llandudno) are the postcard shot, white sand under Table Mountain and Lion's Head, but the water is cold and better for paddling than actual swimming with kids. The False Bay side (Muizenberg, Fish Hoek, St James) is warmer, gentler, and where local families actually teach children to swim, though it sits 30-45 minutes from the city centre. The hotels below sit walking distance from a beach on one side or the other, so pick based on whether you want scenery or swimming.

๐Ÿ–๏ธWhy Cape Town is Great for Hotels with Beach Access

Camps Bay and Clifton hotels put you a five-minute walk from some of the most photogenic beaches in the world, with Lion's Head and the Twelve Apostles mountain range as a backdrop, and a strip of restaurants and ice cream shops along the promenade that make evenings easy with kids. The tradeoff is water temperature: the Atlantic here rarely exceeds 17ยฐC, so plan on paddling and sandcastles rather than long swims, and pack a rash vest even for older kids who get cold fast. The promenade running alongside Camps Bay also gives parents a stroller-friendly path for an evening walk once the beach itself cools down, useful with a toddler who's had enough sand for one day but still wants to be outside.

Muizenberg and Fish Hoek on the False Bay side sit further from central Cape Town, roughly a 30-45 minute drive or a scenic train ride, but reward the trip with warmer water (often 18-21ยฐC) and gentler surf that's genuinely good for teaching young children to swim. Muizenberg's colourful beach huts and consistent small waves also make it the default choice for family surf lessons, with several schools renting soft-top boards sized for kids from about age 6. Fish Hoek in particular is popular with local families for exactly this reason, a long, gently sloping beach with none of the rip currents that make some other Cape beaches require more caution with young swimmers.

Hout Bay, on the more sheltered western side past Camps Bay, splits the difference: calmer water than Camps Bay itself, a working harbour with seal boat trips that fascinate most children, and a slower, less touristy feel than the Atlantic Seaboard hotels. Families staying here often day-trip to Chapman's Peak Drive, one of the most dramatic coastal roads anywhere, though it's best done with kids who can handle a winding drive without motion sickness. Whichever side you choose, pack layers; even a warm beach morning can turn breezy by early afternoon once the Southeaster picks up, and wet kids get cold fast once the wind hits.

Parent's take

We stayed Atlantic-side for the views and did a day trip to Muizenberg specifically so our kids could actually swim rather than just paddle. It was the right call in hindsight; Camps Bay at sunset with Lion's Head glowing pink is unbeatable, but our eight-year-old only really swam properly once we made the trip across to the warmer False Bay water and took a surf lesson.

๐Ÿ’กTips for Choosing a Hotel with Beach Access in Cape Town

  • 1Choose Muizenberg or Fish Hoek over Camps Bay if actual swimming, not just paddling, matters to your kids.
  • 2Pack rash vests even for warmer False Bay beaches; wind chill catches people out even on sunny days.
  • 3Check for lifeguards and flag systems before letting kids swim unsupervised on any Cape Town beach; currents vary by day.
  • 4Book a Muizenberg surf lesson for kids over 6; most schools provide wetsuits and soft-top boards sized for children.
  • 5If staying Atlantic-side, budget a half-day trip to a False Bay beach for actual swimming rather than assuming Camps Bay covers it.
