Johannesburg Hotels With a Kids Club for Families

5 family-friendly hotels with kids club in Johannesburg . Handpicked for families who want the best.

Five Johannesburg hotels run a kids club, and in a city where families are usually in transit that is the difference between a rest day and a long one. The Leonardo in Sandton, AtholPlace Hotel and Villa in Atholl, HYDE Johannesburg Rosebank, Sandton Sun and Towers and Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff all list one. The arrangement works best for children between about four and ten. The honest limit: opening hours in city hotels are shorter than at a coastal resort, so treat a kids club here as a useful two or three hour window rather than all day childcare.

Family life in Johannesburg is organised around a handful of destinations rather than a centre: Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square, the Rosebank malls and Sunday market, the zoo and Zoo Lake, Gold Reef City to the south. Distances are real and traffic is unpredictable, so parents plan one big outing a day and keep the rest close to home. Hotels have adapted, which is why the kids clubs cluster in Sandton and Rosebank where most family visitors actually stay.

๐Ÿง’Why Johannesburg is Great for Hotels with Kids Club

Logistics decide which of the five works. The Leonardo sits six minutes from Gautrain Sandton Station and 1.1 km from Sandton City Mall, with a year round outdoor pool and a restaurant offering vegetarian, vegan and gluten free menus, so a supervised session slots neatly between swimming and an early dinner. Sandton Sun and Towers connects directly to Sandton City and sits 650 metres from the Gautrain, which means a parent can be in a shop three minutes after dropping children off. HYDE Johannesburg Rosebank pairs family rooms with a restaurant serving brunch through dinner, useful when club hours end before you are ready to eat.

Age matters more than the brochure suggests. Four and five year olds do best at the smaller properties, where the club is close to the room and the handover is short: AtholPlace, one kilometre from Sandton Gautrain station, is the clearest example. Six to ten year olds get the most from Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff, where the club sits alongside gardens, bicycles and a playground within a kilometre of the Johannesburg Zoo. From about eleven, most children skip the club and use the pool, the fitness room or the shopping centre attached to the hotel instead.

On value, the club is rarely the reason to book, but it changes what a night is worth. At Sandton Sun and Towers or The Leonardo, a supervised session plus a mall on the doorstep can replace a paid outing and a driver, which is real money in a city where families hire cars. AtholPlace and Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff sit at luxury rates where the club is one part of a package that includes gardens, spa and dining. HYDE Johannesburg Rosebank is the middle option, close to the Gautrain and cheaper than the Sandton towers for a family of four.

Parent's take

The window that mattered was ten to twelve on the Friday. Both children went into the club at The Leonardo, and for the first time in nine days there was a coffee that did not involve refereeing an argument about who had more chips. Sandton City is close enough that we bought the forgotten safari torch and were back before pick up, and the nine year old came out complaining that we had arrived too early, which is the only review that counts.

A temperature controlled swimming pool and a kids club set this small five star property in Atholl apart from larger Sandton hotels. Suites and a separate villa come with balconies, garden views, seating areas, flat screen televisions with casting and minibars. Why families love AtholPlace Hotel & Villa

Families staying here get heated water, which matters between June and August when every other garden pool in Johannesburg is too cold to use. The all day menu covers the awkward four o clock hunger slot, and the villa suits two families travelling together. With only a handful of suites, the atmosphere is quiet, so boisterous under fives are more comfortable in the villa than the main house.

Why families love Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff

Families staying here get the widest range in Johannesburg on one property: a playground for the small ones, bikes and gardens for the middle years, and a kids club that frees an hour for the adults. The zoo is close enough to walk on a cool morning. It is a luxury hotel on a ridge, so pushchairs meet steps and terraces, and the rate only makes sense across several nights.

Family rooms and a kids club on Cradock Avenue put this four star Rosebank hotel within walking distance of the Rosebank malls. Rooms have air conditioning, work desks, minibars, private bathrooms and free WiFi. Three restaurants cover Chinese, Dutch, British and French cuisines across brunch, lunch, dinner, high tea and cocktails, and the property adds a fitness centre, terrace, outdoor seating, coffee shop and airport shuttle.

Why families love HYDE JOHANNESBURG ROSEBANK

Families staying here get a kids club without Sandton tower prices, and three restaurants under one roof, which removes the daily argument about where to eat with a tired six year old. Rosebank is the easiest suburb in Johannesburg to walk with a pushchair. There is no pool listed, so a summer stay needs a swimming plan somewhere else, or a room booked for the winter months instead.

A kids club and a direct connection to Sandton City shopping centre make this five star hotel the easiest Johannesburg address for a family without a car. Family rooms are spacious, the Gautrain is 650 metres away, and dining runs across a bar, a restaurant, a show kitchen and a deck with seasonal menus sourced from local farmers. The spa opens seven days a week and the fitness centre runs 24 hours.

Why families love Sandton Sun and Towers

Families staying here can land at O.R. Tambo, take the Gautrain and never touch a hire car, which removes the single biggest stress of a Johannesburg stopover. The mall link means a wet afternoon has a cinema and a food court at the end of a corridor. It is a large business hotel, so expect conference crowds at breakfast and a lobby that is never quiet.

A kids club and a year round outdoor swimming pool sit inside Africa's tallest building, on Maude Street in Sandton, six minutes from the Gautrain station. Spacious rooms have air conditioning, balconies with city views, minibars and work desks. The restaurant serves international dishes with vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options, breakfast can be taken in the room, and free private parking is available.

๐Ÿ’ฌ

Why families love The Leonardo

Families staying here get the rare Johannesburg combination of a supervised club, a heated season pool and a shopping centre 1.1 km away, which means a day without a car. Balconies with city views occupy children who have run out of patience, and in room breakfast solves the six o clock hunger problem. The building is large, so expect lift waits when conferences are in.

๐Ÿ’กTips for Choosing a Hotel with Kids Club in Johannesburg

  • 1Confirm the club hours and the accepted ages by email before you book. City hotels in Johannesburg run shorter sessions than coastal resorts, and the details change with the season and occupancy.
  • 2Book your own activity around the session, not the other way round. A spa slot or a Sandton City errand at ten in the morning fits the typical window far better than an afternoon plan.
  • 3Choose a Sandton hotel if you have no car. The Leonardo and Sandton Sun and Towers both put the Gautrain and a shopping centre within a few hundred metres, so the free hours are not spent driving.
  • 4Feed children before the session in summer. Johannesburg mornings heat up quickly at altitude, and a child who has swum since eight will fade an hour into any supervised activity.
  • 5Ask whether siblings are split by age group. Younger children often settle faster when an older sibling stays with them for the first session, and some properties allow it on request.
