Hotels With Bike Rental in Dar es Salaam
3 family-friendly hotels with bike rental in Dar es Salaam . Handpicked for families who want the best.
Three hotels with bike rental in Dar es Salaam are clustered within about two kilometres of each other in the old centre, which tells you where cycling here is practical and where it is not. Four Points by Sheraton Dar es Salaam New Africa stands on Azikiwe Street at Sokoine Drive in Kivukoni, a kilometre from the Zanzibar Ferry Terminal. Protea Hotel by Marriott Dar es Salaam Courtyard is on Ocean Road opposite the Presidential Palace. Tiffany Diamond Hotels LTD - Makunganya sits on Makunganya Street in Kisutu, nine minutes' walk from the National Museum and House of Culture.
The old centre of Dar es Salaam is flat, laid out in a rough grid between the harbour and Kariakoo, and shaded in places by mango and flame trees. That geography is why the colonial-era streets around Kisutu, Mchafukoge and Upanga remain the only genuinely bikeable part of the city. Sunday mornings change the character completely: the offices are shut, the Askari Monument roundabout is quiet, and the run along Ocean Road past the Botanical Gardens towards Oyster Bay is as calm as this city gets. By ten the heat has won and everyone goes home.

๐ฒWhy Dar es Salaam is Great for Hotels with Bike Rental
Start with what is realistic. Protea Hotel by Marriott Dar es Salaam Courtyard on Ocean Road is two kilometres from the city centre and puts you directly on the one road families should be cycling, with a swimming pool, a fitness centre and free private parking to come back to. Four Points by Sheraton New Africa has harbour views, an outdoor pool, four restaurants and free parking, and is 900 metres from the National Museum and Botanical Gardens, so a short ride can end at a real destination. Tiffany Diamond in Kisutu is the budget base, ten kilometres from Julius Nyerere International Airport, with family rooms, a hot tub and free private parking.
The age question here is sharper than in other categories. Bike rental in Dar es Salaam suits confident riders of about eight and up, and there is no published information on child bikes, trailers, tag-alongs or helmets at any of the three properties. Younger children are better served by the pools: Protea Courtyard and Four Points both have outdoor pools, and Tiffany Diamond has a hot tub, a sun terrace and a family-friendly restaurant running African, Indian and international menus. Families with teenagers get the most from this category, because a Sunday morning ride from Ocean Road to the Botanical Gardens and back is a genuine outing rather than a hotel activity.
On value the three are clearly tiered and each makes sense for a different family. Tiffany Diamond is a four star at 8.3 from 588 reviews with free private parking and more repeat guests than most properties in the city, and it is the cheapest way into this list. Protea Courtyard is a three star at 8.7 from 359 reviews, the best rated of the three, with a pool, a 24 hour coffee shop and a highly recommended restaurant. Four Points is a four star at 8.3 from 623 reviews with the strongest location for the ferry and a golf course 1.4 kilometres away. The honest warning is universal here: bring your own helmets, because nobody guarantees them.
Parent's take
We rode out from Ocean Road at half past six on a Sunday, the only hour that made sense, past the Botanical Gardens with the sea on the right and almost no traffic. The nine year old managed about four kilometres before the heat arrived properly around eight and we turned back for the pool at Protea. The four year old stayed behind with a plate of mandazi. One good ride, correctly timed, was worth more than three attempted ones.

Protea Hotel by Marriott Dar es Salaam Courtyard
Dar es Salaam
Excellent

Why families love Protea Hotel by Marriott Dar es Salaam Courtyard

Four Points by Sheraton Dar es Salaam New Africa
Dar es Salaam
Very Good
623 reviews
Standard rooms overlooking Dar es Salaam Harbour, one kilometre from the Zanzibar Ferry Terminal, define this Azikiwe Street four star. There is an outdoor pool, four restaurants including Bandari Grill for seafood and Sawasdee for Thai, and the Onyx Lounge. Rooms hold air conditioning, satellite TV, a minibar and a private bathroom. A golf course sits 1.4 kilometres away, the National Museum and Botanical Gardens 900 metres, and free parking is on site.
Why families love Four Points by Sheraton Dar es Salaam New Africa
Families staying here are buying the ferry run and the harbour view. Catching an early Azam boat to Zanzibar from a hotel a kilometre from the pier removes the worst variable of that trip. Bike rental and the walk to the Botanical Gardens fill a morning, and the pool handles the afternoon. The 24 hour casino on site is separate from the family floors but changes the lobby atmosphere after dark.

Tiffany Diamond Hotels LTD - Makunganya
Dar es Salaam
Very Good
588 reviews
A kids club and family rooms at four star level nine minutes' walk from the National Museum and House of Culture put this Kisutu address in a category of its own. Rooms carry air conditioning, city views, a minibar and a TV. The hotel adds a hot tub, sun terrace, fitness centre, bar and free private parking, plus bike rental. The restaurant runs African, Indian, British and Asian menus, with continental, buffet and full English breakfasts.
Why families love Tiffany Diamond Hotels LTD - Makunganya
Families staying here trade pool space for walking distance, and in central Dar es Salaam that is a fair swap. The museum and the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre are both reachable on foot with a child, which no other kids club hotel in the city can claim. The wide breakfast range covers halal, vegan and gluten-free eaters. There is no swimming pool, so budget an afternoon elsewhere in the heat.
๐กTips for Choosing a Hotel with Bike Rental in Dar es Salaam
- 1Ride before eight in the morning, ideally on a Sunday. Ocean Road and the Kisutu grid are calm at that hour, and by ten the heat and the traffic together make cycling with children unpleasant.
- 2Bring your own helmets from home. None of the three Dar es Salaam hotels publishes helmet or child-seat availability, and buying locally at short notice is not reliable.
- 3Ask specifically about child-size bikes when you book the room. Bike rental at these properties is listed as an amenity without any detail on frames, trailers or tag-alongs.
- 4Keep the route to Ocean Road and the Botanical Gardens. Beyond the old centre the daladalas and bajajis make cycling with a child a poor idea, whatever the map suggests about distance.
- 5Pick Protea Courtyard if the ride is the point. It sits on Ocean Road itself, rates highest of the three at 8.7, and has a pool to return to when the temperature climbs.
